HAWTHORNE, Fla. — The City of Hawthorne celebrated a major milestone today with the grand opening of its new branch library—more than doubling the size of its previous facility and creating a modern space designed to serve residents for years to come.
The new library spans 10,078 square feet, replacing the former 5,000-square-foot building that served the community for many years. The project totaled $3.6 million and was completed under budget by approximately $33,000.
The facility was constructed by Scherer Construction, with design by Walker Architects, delivering a space that reflects both growth and intention.

Blending Growth with Community Roots
While the building itself is new, several elements were intentionally carried over to honor the library’s history.
A familiar papier-mâché lion, previously displayed in the former library, has been placed in the new facility—offering a sense of continuity for longtime residents. In addition, two planters in the foyer were constructed using bricks from the original building, preserving a physical connection to the past.
It’s a thoughtful balance: moving forward while still remembering where the community has been.

More Than Just a Library
The new facility expands what a library can offer.
Residents now have access to:
A 3D printer and Cricut machine for creative projects
A dedicated teen space
An enhanced children’s area for early learning
A large meeting room for community events
Two private study rooms
A wide selection of computers and digital resources
This transformation reflects the evolving role of libraries as community hubs for learning, technology, and connection.

Powered by Community Support
Several organizations were recognized for their contributions.
The Friends of the Library have donated more than $6 million to the library district over time, including a $75,000 contribution to support the Quiet Reading Room.
The Alachua County Library District Foundation also contributed $65,000 toward the development of the library’s teen space.
These partnerships played a key role in bringing the vision for the new library to life.

A Day That Felt Like Community

The grand opening brought together residents, local officials, and community leaders, with several speakers highlighting the importance of the library as a space for growth and opportunity.
Guests were welcomed with refreshments—including fruit and cake—which added to the celebratory atmosphere of the day.
A Personal Perspective

As someone who grew up in Hawthorne, this moment carried a deeper meaning.
One of my favorite parts was seeing the papier-mâché lion still there in the new library. I remember that from growing up, so that was a cool full-circle moment for me. Seeing that same spirit carried into a larger, more advanced space—while still holding onto pieces of its history—was something I was genuinely glad to witness.
There’s a clear sense that this isn’t just a new building—it’s an investment in people.
Looking Ahead
The new Hawthorne Branch Library represents more than expansion—it represents opportunity.
Opportunity for students.
Opportunity for families.
Opportunity for anyone in the community looking to learn, connect, or grow.
And as Hawthorne continues to evolve, spaces like this will play a key role in shaping what comes next.
